The Thief and the Red Mandolin by Samuel A Mayo (Black Armor Tales #1) with spoilers

Sam gave me this book a while back and I got it conflated with another book I'm not sure I ever finished. I cracked it open on Christmas break and it was great to read by the fire. The story includes three thieves, a bard, an elf, a small giant, a knight, a witch, pirates, ogres, and a journey. Jarek- a master thief finds himself in the middle of a job his apprentices are working (at odds with each other). The job is complicated. The stolen items, a magic spyglass, and an indestructible scroll are items of magic and power. The knight commissioning the job enchants Addie with a ring. When Jarek gets involved, he takes the items and seeks to learn their purposes. Not finding answers, Jarek takes Satchel and Addie to Leona seeking help from an old friend, Bosco.

In a separate story thread, the bard with the cursed red mandolin is seeking the indestructible scroll. The bard struggles to control the mandolin (think evil genie in a mandolin), and the mandolin struggles to control the bard. An elf saves the bard and attempts to teach the bard some magic to help control the mandolin. The bard, after learning enough magic to be dangerous flys after the scroll, seeking it to bring back his dead love.

The threads of the thief (Satchel) and the bard meet in Leona. Satchel has found the black armor. The white knight who is hunting the scroll and spyglass draws Satchel, Jarek, and Bosco into an epic battle in the Leona cathedral. Jarek sacrifices himself to save his friends, but his sacrifice isn't enough. Eventually, the bard appears and unleashes the mandolin to play the music written on the magic scroll. The music destroys the knight and half of Leona. Satchel, Bosco, and Addie escape Leona and travel to Brunland, seeking info about the spyglass. There, Bosco is kidnapped and Satchel seeks out Captain Sebastian; one of Jarek's old friends. The book ends with the crew ready to sail in search of answers.
